Eusebio Sempere

Sculptor, painter and graphic artist. He began his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia in 1940, later moving to Paris to continue his studies. It is in this city where he begins to relate to the works and most avant-garde and international artists such as Chillida, Palazuelo, Jean Arp, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Klee, Matisse and Picasso that would decisively influence his work.

In 1960, he returns to Spain and settles in Madrid, where he relates to a select group of informalists, the "Cuenca Group" and the group of Madrid realists. He is also part of the "Parpalló Group" in Valencia. In 1969, he travels to the United States with a scholarship and there he begins to experiment in the use of the computer for artistic purposes, a technique that he would continue upon his return at the Computing Center of the University of Madrid, making him a pioneer of this art in Spain.

In 1983 he is awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. He is named favorite son of the city of Alicante and Doctor Honoris Causa of this university.

He dies in April 1985 after a long illness.

Work
Sempere's work is defined by abstraction, geometric repetition and linearity, evolving towards Op Art and constructivism with elements of kinetic art.

His personal contribution to this kinetic movement consists of his series of geometric and abstract constructions to which he imprints the effect of illusion of vibration and movement.

Perhaps conditioned by his Levantine origin, light also plays an important role in his plastic work, using it as the main element to create harmony and organize planes. He considers his paintings as a two-dimensional surface where he plays with visual elements, light, color and tones, seeking optical effects to create volumes in his repeated geometric figures.

Mobile (1972, MEAL, Madrid). His work encompasses very diverse media, from drawings, gouaches, oils, paintings, silkscreens to sculptures of iron and chrome steel.

Two of his works can be seen in the Open Air Sculpture Museum of Madrid, for which he created the railings, today unfortunately painted blue, which suggest a curious moiré effect when walking next to them, and a mobile, donated by the artist to the museum.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Alicante contains an extensive collection of his works that encompasses all the media worked by the artist.
