Self-Portrait in Palace or The Dog belongs to the series Autopsy of a Craft, in which Equipo Crónica worked between 1969 and 1970. Composed of ten paintings and as many multiples, the series takes as reference the iconography of Las Meninas by Velázquez to analyze the craft of painting and place painting in its place as queen and mirror of the arts.
An explicit vindication in this work. The two artists, in the foreground in the same way that the original work places the main characters of Las Meninas, appear as two house painters who, during a break from their work (the painting is not finished since a white, empty area appears), stop to reflect on the work they are carrying out. Or they have stopped their work because someone has entered the room, in the same way that Velázquez pauses his work and the Infanta Margarita makes a gesture of reverence because the kings have entered, whom we see reflected in the mirror at the back of the room. Another distortion appears in this Self-Portrait. The Dog becomes the main character of the painting, occupying with a gigantic volume the entire space of the canvas.
The series was presented for the first time in 1970 at the Val i 30 Gallery in Valencia and at the Honda Room in Cuenca. In both spaces the artists filled the exhibition with figures representing the public watching, wooden character portraits of themselves and their friends, visualizing the paintings. In 1976 when these works were presented in the individual exhibition of Equipo Crónica at the Juana Mordó Gallery in Madrid, the authors themselves write an explanatory text in the catalog: "This time the backdrop is again the "Classical" painting, especially Velázquez's Las Meninas. In almost the entire series we have included our own image, as belonging to the action that each painting describes. We consciously use associations of images that in some way refer to "surrealism". Technically we continue to use the flat ink procedure. We occasionally incorporate fluorescent colors and Walt Disney images, since we want to achieve a certain "Kitsch" atmosphere in the treatment of Velázquez. ".
