Intermedia Performance by Concha Jerez and José Iges. The term translocations provides a brief account of the operations that will come into play in the course of these two works, both belonging to the Intermedia Performance genre. In their respective titles, the duration 4'33" appears as a common element, as it is the temporal measure of the different actions to be developed in them. We chose this temporal pattern for being an emblem of modernity. There are no other explicit references to Cage's aesthetics or thinking behind this gesture.
According to Physics, a translation is a movement in which the position of an object is modified. Translation is also considered an operation on objects. In our case, naturally these notions are employed in a metaphorical way—which also leads us, etymologically, to the notion of transport—although here we are working with light materials and immaterial elements, to which approaches inherited from conceptual practice and from sound and visual actionism are applied.
The translocations of the first work FOUR GUIDED VISITS OF 4'33" are carried out motorically and verbally by Concha Jerez with reference to some works from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Alicante. It is a series of four in situ actions in specific spaces of the Museum's rooms, focusing on a communicative format rooted in museum tradition such as the guided tour, taken here by the author as a Medium. Each of these actions will allow organizing in 4'33" gestures and sounds in the Museum's space among spectators and authors/performers, in a unique and unrepeatable time.
The second work SIX LANDSCAPES OF 4'33" created by Concha Jerez and José Iges, has to do with the disappearance of the real world. What we call reality is nothing but "the dominant fiction, the consensual fiction, the one that denies its character as fiction by passing itself off as reality itself" (Jacques Ranciére). There are therefore countless possible narratives, and artistic fiction should serve to undermine that "consensual fabric of the real." That is what we intend with the entire framework of sounds that merge in the different parts of the work. These sounds come from places and times distant from each other, coexist in a single space and take form in it.
When we proceed this way, we consider that the sound samples employed are more than anecdotes and less than documents. They are "specters."
The double operation of employing sound samples and of doing so to construct new realities—or rather new fictions, new narratives—causes a double disappearance of the real. This operation is a translocation that refers us to those places, beings, spaces; but by projecting them in another context we deprive them of representativeness, we convert them into specters of themselves. The MACA was the venue for the intermedia performance carried out by Concha Jerez and José Iges.
