The Collection was bequeathed to MACA by Alicante-born artist Juana Francés, one of the most relevant artists in the Spanish artistic landscape of the second half of the 20th century, a pioneer of abstract informalism and the only woman in the emblematic group El Paso. The Collection comprises more than a hundred works including drawings, paintings, boxes, silkscreens and lithographs that span her four defined creative stages: from the first enigmatic and symbolist figurative works of the late 1940s and early 1950s to the dazzling informalist pieces of the late 1950s and 1960s that gave way to her most radical works of the 1970s where she reflected on the dehumanization of human beings in her well-known "boxes". Following these, and already in the 1980s, Juana Francés sought harmony and balance through the use of color in subtle kite papers and underwater backgrounds, to return once again, at the end of her life, to gesture and matter. An essential collection to recognize the work of one of the most outstanding artists of her generation; works that demonstrate mastery of materials and the experimental will that remained intact throughout her entire professional trajectory, marking her artistic personality.
