Artwork text

I'm fine, thank you, don't bother… is a work from 1966 resulting from an exchange with Sempere carried out in 1969. It belongs to the set of works with which Andrés Cillero formulated his theory of "Grotesch Art", presented for the first time at the Ateneo de Madrid that same year accompanied by a manifesto. The artist himself explained the concept: "It was an attempt to play with pictorial volume, replacing planes and gradations of light-color with incorporated relief, real volume". Grotesch Art was, in his definition, a particular compendium of surrealism and pop art, a linking of disparate objects that generates new meanings in the union of opposing messages.

The work is a tribute to the film Alphaville by Jean-Luc Godard (1965), whose protagonist, Eddie Constantine, obsessively repeated on screen the phrase that gives the piece its title. The composition is structured in two registers. In the upper part, the title appears printed twice on red stripes: once right-side up and once inverted, flanking a textile piece made with the macramé technique. In the lower part, a large red circle on a black background frames in its center the zoqueta, a traditional leather piece that was used to protect the hand when reaping with a sickle. The encounter between the cinematic text, the artisanal object and the roundness of the red circle concentrates Cillero's intention: to make popular culture and mass culture, tradition and modernity dialogue.
