About the work of...Juana Francés

Great artists . January 2026

Guided vermouth tour by Explicarte.

Traditionally, women have been considered second-class citizens in the world of culture. This position was based on a statistic supported by a very limited number of women who had stood out in the field of literature, thought, and the plastic arts. This idea crumbles in the face of a simple consideration: the reduced opportunities they had to develop their personal talents.

On this occasion, we will focus on the figure of Juana Francés, the protagonist of our temporary exhibition.

Voices that appear

Submitted by brandcode_deweloper on

Dubbing has been a tool through which the Spanish population has approached cinema and shaped its social and political life. In this performance, the silenced voices of women artists from the 1980s will be recovered, when conceptualism, abstraction, or informalism had no place in a moment of escapism and celebration. Experimenting with this cinematographic resource allows us to speculate on new readings of the transition, generating a new un-doubling.

Shared Spaces. Javier Terrados

The architecture table 12

«Shared Spaces». Javier Terrados. Thursday, January 29 at 7 p.m. Free admission.

The children who play in the corridors of the residential building, now streets of their imagination and their domain, the elderly who converse in the waiting areas of the health center, in the anterooms that seem like plazas of a village lost in time, the high school students who improvise an event in the atrium of the institute, now their comedy yard, the neighbors who make the vestibule of the municipal theater their second temple, the businessmen who in the exhibition center update the timeless rituals of commerce and cultural mestizaje.

Scenes of shared spaces. Architectures in the diffuse margins between the public and the private. New sanctuaries, places where encounter and personal interaction are gifted.

In this dissertation, a tour is proposed through a set of architectural works that propose a commitment to the viability of these places, broadening the usual limits of rules, conventions, regulations and scarcities, and generating other possible scenarios of community encounter. Collective dwellings, health centers, theaters, exhibition centers, schools and institutes, treated as supports for unusual experiences of coexistence.

Workshop of Graphic Music

Submitted by brandcode_deweloper on
January 2026

A laboratory for graphic and musical creation, for all ages and levels. No prior training is necessary, but you should have an interest in sound, drawing, and experimentation with these disciplines. From curiosity, creativity and play, in the workshop we work with graphic scores, that is: intuitive, rare, unique, invented and expanded scores, with which to represent imagined music or music that we also create in the workshop.

Each session is original and unpublished, so you can attend all of them or just some. We learn about the connections between musical and visual creation, and we see examples from different artists and composers. We also sometimes work with exhibitions and museum collections, bringing a sonic perspective to the center's content.

Audience: from 8 years old with no upper limit. Minors must be accompanied.

It is recommended to bring your own drawing materials. No prior training is necessary. Led by Carlos Izquierdo

Long live Juana! The woman and the city.

Submitted by brandcode_deweloper on

Long Live Juana! The Woman and the City is a theatrical performance about the figure of Alicante-born artist Juana Francés. Through poetic text, we approach the complexity of a woman who had nothing easy in finding her place in the art world. Two Juanas, the artist and the personal, in continuous conflict but at the same time complementary and essential. A trajectory dedicated to research, to seeking new ways to express her concern about human beings, society and solitude.

This piece wants to pay sincere homage to an exceptional artist who triumphed both within and beyond our borders. From the present we look into a gray time where women could not have the same opportunities as their male counterparts. This is the story of a nonconformist artist who dedicated her life to doing what she loved most. No one imagined that Juana could live without asking for permission.

Juana and the Observant Beings. Participatory Performance

Submitted by brandcode_deweloper on
Big words

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Alicante-born artist Juana Francés, the Palabras Mayores group presents the performance Juana and the Observant Beings, a collective creation conceived, produced and realized by the participants in this intergenerational museum project.

Palabras Mayores is a meeting space for people over 60 years old who, every Wednesday, come to the museum to learn, dialogue, display and experiment with contemporary art and culture. A place of creative freedom where vital experience becomes artistic material.

This performance proposes a scenic reinterpretation of Juana Francés' creative process, placing the audience within a mind in constant ferment. As if we were traversing her thoughts, obsessions and questions, the action is articulated in dialogue with the series The Man and the City, one of the artist's most emblematic works, in which she addresses society from dystopia, dehumanization, the alienation of the individual and the tension between matter, body and urban environment.

The so-called Observant Beings—hybrid figures, almost homunculi—inhabit the space as silent, critical and vulnerable witnesses. They observe, surround and question both the action and the audience, inviting a shared reflection on the human condition, the city, the passage of time and the contemporary gaze.

The performance is participatory, open to the direct experience of the audience, who cease to be mere spectators to become part of the mental and symbolic atmosphere that runs through the piece.
