Abstraction

Facing the informalist tendency, a series of artists work on abstraction by returning to Kandinsky. They no longer create expressionist abstraction or dramatic material paintings. The essence of the spiritual in art shapes what we have called lyrical abstraction, to which we could add terms such as spatialist abstraction, structuralist abstraction… Painting is emotion and is practiced with the freedom to make painting and to rely solely on plastic elements.

The Spanish Civil War and Francoism liquidated avant-garde art and turned the country into an isolated territory dominated by censorship, which recovered thanks to a series of essential artists. In their work, the texture of matter and the violent, vital, and automatic gesture of the very act of painting are important. They incorporate materials such as metal mesh, scrap metal, treated wood… along with burlap, ropes, papers, earth and sand, producing a language rich in evocations, tensions and qualities.

Constructivism

Within a rationalist, concrete and normative trend, a series of Spanish artists experiment around geometry. Deeply reflective, their works always constructed with essential forms and volumes dialogue again and again about space, movement and balance. Geometry is an attitude towards life: the essence of compositions and in the rigorous analysis of form to construct an objective image of the world.

In 1950s Paris, geometric forms become the protagonists of an art with industrial appearance concerned with research on light and optical effects. And most importantly, movement, real or virtual. The structure moves by chance or by an incorporated motor and transforms its appearance and the space surrounding it. Open works of art, neither unique nor definitive, that involve the viewer in a novel way.

Pioneers of twentieth-century art who radically changed the way we look at the world. Sempere manages to bring together fundamental names in the history of art, indisputable for their importance and subsequent influence but also for the beauty of their works. We thus approach the great aesthetic adventure of modernity with works by the great artists who led it.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century with the invention of photography, art frees itself from the representation of reality and pursues the expression of personal experiences. In groups or tendencies, artists relate to each other to form a movement that expresses their concerns. The avant-gardes of the twentieth century emerge: fauvism, cubism, futurism, constructivism, expressionism, dadaism, surrealism... Some of these artists or tendencies are represented in the Twentieth Century Art Collection.
